Quick Overview

This beautiful rice straw painting looks like a scene from the green and scenic backwaters of Kerala. Still and tranquil, there is a meditative quality to this piece of art.

The history of straw art goes way back in time when people didn’t know how to make various colors, paint or dyes, around 2000 years ago. The artists at that time used the natural colors of the rice straw (dried leaves of the rice plant) to create images. They used the different shades of rice straw to create color for their art works. Each work of art consists of hundreds of tiny pieces of rice straw cut and put into place and glued on to the handmade paper. All materials used are natural (leaves, glue is a sap from a tree, handmade paper).

This unique leaf art (no two pieces look alike) originated in Kerala, India thousands of years ago and passed on from generation to generation. This art form is endangered with less than 100 artists around the world. There are attempts being made across the world to revive it, in fact there is a rice straw museum in Galveston, Texas, which is dedicated to preserve, promote & protect this ancient art from extinction.
